Power of Projection

One of the hottest event trends at the moment is using large-scale projections to create mass visual impact.  Even a recent episode of Australian Celebrity Apprentice tasked the teams with creating an outdoor projection event to sell a product brand!

Advanced projection technology enables event managers to be creative with event design and to create an interactive, sensory experience for audiences.

At j2, we have long recognised the power of projection as a highly effective visual platform.  Adopting a creative direction that incorporates projection, pushes boundaries and is high in impact.

Visual effects such as projection, enable event managers to take audiences on a sensational and emotive journey and will ensure that your event makes a lasting impression.

Our first exposure to large-scale projections (pun intended) was back at the 2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane (see above) when we projected board game imagery onto the iconic Queensland Performing Arts ComplexIt was our aim to create a clever play on the term “games” and to well, grab attention and it worked.

Since this first foray into using projection for events, our team has come to love the ever-improving technology.  Large-scale projections were a main themeing element for the 20th Anniversary World Expo 88 Charity Dinner which saw the Great Hall in the Brisbane Convention Centre awash with images from the iconic Expo 88 event.

The annual SU QLD Frontline Chaplaincy Appeal Dinner directed by j2 relies on the projection component to create a highly emotive environment to foster the event’s fundraising component (raising over $700k).  Projections create excitement, grab your audience and are actually a cost effective contribution towards the overall creative direction of your event.

So how can event planners put projection technology to use?

Firstly think big! Projections allow you to communicate with your audience en masse so think about how you can best capitalise upon this – will you push a brand message or create an emotional connection with your audience (like we did for the SU QLD Frontline event)?

The opportunities for technology at your next event are endless. Wash walls with colour and corporate brands, engage conference attendees through the use of holograms and projection mapping, create interactive art installations or electronic public art pieces – just to name a few!

Here are some of our favourite uses of projections (aside from our own of course):
